Marwen is an art center for children in downtown Chicago, IL. There are various after school programs in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, prints, metal, and fiber.
Although I normally do not teach children, I was interested in the program at Marwen, so I did it. It was fantastic! Great experience.

I introduced traditional SASHIKO (stitching) and BORO (stitching). Boro is a rug or waste cloth, and patched and mendid to repair originally in Japan. It can be an art form. Since we wanted to use all indigo blue shades, Rachel who invited me to teach a workshop, dyed fabric previously to make several shades of blue. Although I was not sure how much children can sew, many students (6th and 7th grade) tried to sew and they were fine! Children are very flexible and try to challenge a new art form. The workshop was a short time. Even so, Rachel will continue to instruct them to teach stitching following classes. Then after finishing the pieces, they will be displayed for the exhibition in the gallery at Marwen. Children will be excited to see their accomplishment.
It was only for a week and it was very intense. Even so, we went through whole process; designing and cut out stencils, cooking rice paste, spreading rice paste through stencil, brushing soy milk, alum, and natural dyes, such as Lac, Weld, Madder, and Logwood finishing to set colors. We made a indigo dye vat and dipped rice pasted fabric. Also we dipped already colored with natural dye; yellow of Weld made lovely green after dipping it into indigo dye bath.
During the critique. They were productive! I was impressed by student who came from different back ground, not fiber. Even so, the core is an art. Use of different medium must be a great opportunity to discover new direction. Especially young people who pracite different meium tried to lean Katazome, and I admired their experimentation.
I would like to share the photos of the students: They did wonderful work!!! They followed the basic rice paste resist technique, then pushed harder to develop the possible way to use the technique. It was impressive to observe their development.
People come from various back grounds and they are young to matured in age. Adult workshop is wonderful because we all share with our life experiences in class. A student always something to tell a story about her life. It makes the class richer!!!
Wright Visiting Artist Program by Temari. I taught "Stitching a Story" at the Honolulu Museum of Art School, and "Nejiri Indigo Shibori" at the Lyon Arboretum. The workshop of "Stitching a Story" is to mono-print on fabric first, then stitch on the printed fabric. The students brought pictures, portrate photos for their inspiration. Stitching gives more tactic quality and focal point for the entire design.
Nejiri Indigo Shibori was fun to explore because there are various ways to make interesting patterns. Full of green plants nicely matched with indigo blue at the Arboretum.
It was beautiful place of Hawaii. I felt exotic plants ans sunshine give energy and power for humans. People in Hawaii were very gently and relaxed. I totally enjoyed staying there.
In this workshop, participants will create images by experimenting with Katazome: making rice paste & soymilk with traditional recipes, stencil cutting, application of a variety of natural dyes and mordant, and then setting colors to complete the process. We will observe objects in nature from the surroundings of Shakerag, such as leaves, flowers, and branches, to get a sense of the Japanese aesthetic.

Explore images on natural fabric with various
shades of indigo blues and various natural dyes, such as Cutch, Osage,
Cochineal, Madder applying Shibori
resist techniques. Over-dyeing natural dyes and indigo creates tasty
colors. Although indigo and natural dyeing have been applied to clothes
and interior decorations for over 700 years in Japan, the harmoniously
beautiful colors appear "contemporary" in our modern life style.

This is a wonderful group and I love their concept to preserve arts and crafts traditoion, and restore to support for local artisans and crafts people. It would not easy in this modern world, but it is very valuable and meaningful.
I was fortuntelly invited to teach two workshops and to speak the lecture. I gave so much information for the Katazome and Natural Dyes class (because it is complicated process), however, all students challenged and accomplished so well! It was my true reward. Indigo Shibori class was also very intense and the students made a lot of lovely patterns with indigo Shibori. -akemi cohn
First few pictures are Gent and Brugge in Belgium.

The middle pictures are at Zijdelings www.zijdelings.com in Tilburg. The last few pictures are in Amsterdam. I enjoyed learning a history of the East India company(17th.century through 19th century) at the Tropen Museum. It connects with my favorite "sarasa" (chintz?) cotton textiles (madder & indigo dyed) to Japan. It was indeed a global trading much more than now.

Thank you my friends! I had a wonderful trip to Belgium, Tilburg, and Amsterdam. Thank you Karina (Zijdelings) for inviting me to teach a workshop. I abserved a lot different histories and cultures. Still these European countries had relationship with Japan, and it was interesting to view from different angle. So many lovely people and they treated me so warm and kind. "Dank U" and "Tot ziens".
